The team at Crooked Books on Crown Street, Hebden Bridge, have issued a heartfelt plea to their customers as they witness shops in their town closing every week. They are determined not to be next.

“We have NO PLANS to close,” they assure their patrons. But the reality is tough: “Everyone is struggling and shops in Hebden are closing weekly. We really don’t want to be next.”

Crooked Books, which specialises in magical, nature, and witchcraft books, posted an update highlighting their struggles. On a recent Sunday, they made only £35, a stark contrast to their usual busy weekend takings. With monthly expenses exceeding £1,500, not including stock, they are finding it hard to keep up.

“We can’t afford more stock, so we’re making everything from scratch until supplies run out and we can get more,” they explained. The shop is immensely grateful for the community it has built and doesn’t want to see that disappear. “We try to stay positive online but we don’t want to suddenly close without even warning you all that it’s possible.”

To support them, Crooked Books encourages customers to consider purchasing books through their online shop, where they receive 30 per cent of the sale, just five per cent less than in-store purchases. They also offer remote tarot readings.

“Alternatively, visit us and buy something in store! Even a spell candle, card, or crystal really helps,” the store posted.
