🚨 Parking Charges at Halifax GP Surgeries Spark Outcry 🚨

Patients at some GP surgeries in Halifax are being charged for incorrect parking, causing frustration and concern, especially among vulnerable people. Andrew Sykes, from Noah’s Ark in Ovenden, recently received a £100 invoice for not registering his car number plate at Spring Hall Medical Practice, which manages five practices in Calderdale. After appealing, the fine was increased, and a private debt collection firm is now involved.

“It’s not just about my fine,” Sykes said, “it’s about vulnerable people being unfairly punished. A friend of mine received a fine simply for waiting in the car while her father attended a GP appointment.”

The issue was highlighted by Halifax MP Kate Dearden, who is advocating for constituents affected by these charges. “Being fined for incorrectly inputting details adds to the anxiety of visiting the doctor, especially for vulnerable patients,” Dearden said. She has been engaging with civil enforcement companies and the practices involved to find a resolution.

Civil Enforcement Ltd., the company managing the parking system for Spring Hall Medical Practices, stated that the system was introduced to prevent unauthorized parking, which often resulted in legitimate patients missing appointments. They emphasized that the system is easy to use and that mitigating circumstances are considered in appeals. “The surgery itself can cancel parking charges for patients who provide evidence of their appointment,” a representative said.

Spring Hall Medical Practices apologized for the inconvenience and stated that they are working to raise awareness about the parking system to prevent future fines. “Visitors need to enter their car registration on the digital device inside the practice. Signs are in place, and help is always available if needed,” they assured.

Patients and residents are encouraged to report any issues with the parking system and to engage with the relevant authorities to resolve any fines.
