A recent consultation has revealed strong public support for a new tram network in West Yorkshire. The West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) reported that out of 4,845 respondents, more than two-thirds favored a route connecting Leeds and Bradford.
Additionally, over three-quarters backed a line from St James’s Hospital in north Leeds to the White Rose Shopping Centre in the city’s south. WYCA will use this feedback to select preferred route options later this year, with a detailed consultation planned for early 2026.
According to the report, respondents prioritized improving connections with residential areas, reducing traffic congestion, and ensuring quick journey times.
Several route options were presented, with the most popular being:
Support was also strong for all three Bradford Line options:
Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, emphasized the significance of this project, stating, “This is our region’s biggest infrastructure project in decades and will help us deliver on the growth mission to put more money in people’s pockets.”
University of Bradford Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shirley Congdon, also expressed support, highlighting the benefits for students, workers, businesses, and residents, as well as the potential for reduced carbon emissions and congestion.
Construction is anticipated to begin by 2028.
