Across the road from where former Keighley Sound Radio was based, rises a shopping behemoth three years in the making!
Yes, Keighley’s long-awaited new £10 million Aldi supermarket will begin trading on Thursday, February 6.
Paralympic gold medallist Ben Watson, who won two cycling golds in Tokyo, is performing the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8am – and will give away free bags of fruit and veg to the first 30 customers.
The store will employ nearly 40 people.
In addition to a wide range of foodstuffs and other products, there will be a ‘food to go’ section.
Store manager, Julie Allen, says: “We can’t wait to open the doors.
“It’s set to be a special day, and having Paralympic hero Ben Watson join us will make it a morning to remember.”
Mr Watson is attending in support of a partnership between Paralympics GB and Aldi.
He says: “I’m excited to be opening the new store; it will be great to chat to customers.”
Planning permission for the development, which will be known as Alexandra Mills Retail Park and also include smaller shop units and a drive-through restaurant, was originally granted just over three years ago.
Aldi had stated the project would start in 2023, but there were delays as revisions were made to the plans.
Work eventually got underway last summer.
The new supermarket is replacing the existing, smaller outlet in Gresley Road.
Aldi is encouraging any charities or food banks in the area interested in benefitting from surplus food and perishable products to register with the community engagement platform, Neighbourly. Email aldi@neighbourly.com for more details.
