A new library has been established in a section of Halifax. This facility is part of the Mixenden Community Hub and welcomed its first visitors yesterday, coinciding with World Book Day.

In addition to a wide selection of books, the library provides IT equipment, free internet access, and new ‘playboxes’ filled with games and activities designed to promote early speech, language, communication, and numeracy skills.

The North Halifax Primary Care Network is relocating to one of the other units within the hub to offer community healthcare services, complementing the nearby GP surgery and supported by the Calderdale Cares Partnership.

There is also space at the hub for a shop or office, and the community garden is already being enjoyed by residents.

Councillor Scott Patient, the deputy leader of Calderdale Council, visited the library on its opening day alongside Coun Danielle Durrans, cabinet member for Public Services and Communities; Coun Shane Taylor, ward councillor for Illingworth and Mixenden; and Ian Day, the council’s director of public services.

“The North Halifax Strategy demonstrates a 10-year commitment to revitalising the area in collaboration with the community.

“The completion of the Mixenden Community Hub and the library’s opening marks a significant step towards realising our long-term vision for the area.

“It’s wonderful to see the community engaging with the fantastic new library and garden already.

“As additional services move in, we anticipate the hub will evolve into a space where individuals can manage their health, learn, unwind, and connect with one another.

“Thanks to everyone who has collaborated to establish this vital centre at the heart of our strong community.”

Dr Geetha Chandrasekaran, a GP in Halifax and clinical director for the primary care network, remarked: “The library’s opening within the Mixenden Hub is a crucial moment for the community, and the North Halifax Primary Care Network is thrilled to be involved in this transformative initiative.

“We will soon be relocating our services to the building, helping to ensure the health and well-being of local residents while fostering connections and supporting local development.

“The hub not only improves access to these essential services but also exemplifies the strength of collaboration in building a brighter future for north Halifax.”

Yet the library in Mytholmroyd  still remains closed after many years. This large village is a prime example where services have been slashed. Even the promised new public toilets never materialised and Mytholmroyd doesn’t even have a designated “warm space” to speak of.
