Two individuals have been charged with criminal damage after a Paddington Bear statue was severed in half in Newbury, Berkshire, yesterday.

Daniel Heath, 22, from Oakhall Park in Thornton, is facing accusations alongside William Lawrence, 22, of John Street, Enderby, Leicestershire.

The charges pertain to criminal damage and the theft of the statue on Northbrook Street around 2am.

This statue was one of 23 positioned on benches throughout the UK as part of a national trail.

It held special significance for Newbury, being the birthplace of Paddington’s author, Michael Bond.

Heath and Lawrence were granted conditional bail and are scheduled to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on 25 March.
